Leota
Cassie Fife was the second daughter of Jim & Fanny (James Buckley Fife and Frances
Pamela Wotton). This narrative was written by her in June of 1971. She credits Nora (Anna
Lenora Fife) and Cynthia Fife with much of the early part of the history. Nora and Cynthia
are daughters of Charles Tupper Fife and Margaret J Brown. |

In
1864, Ambrose F. Church was commissioned by the Nova Scotia legislature to create a series
of maps, one for each of Nova Scotia's 18 counties. Each shows the locations of towns and
villages, basic topographic features and the names of residents. The maps were completed
between 1864 and 1888. This is a portion of the Cumberland County map centered on the New
Canaan area. There are two instances of 'S. Fife' listed near the intersection of Lake
Road and the New Canaan Road. The S. Fife is Samuel, the youngest son of John and
his oldest son Samuel. The elder Samuel was between the ages of 50 and 74 during this time
and his son would have been between 23 and 47 years old. |

This
is taken from part of the Springhill Topographic Map number 21 H/9 dated 1982. I've indicated the
location of the New Canaan Cemetery, the West Brook Cemetery, the location of Jim and Fanny's home
site, the location of Charlie and Maggie's home site, Hilton's home site -
which used to be the old Fife Schoolhouse, Murray's Home site,
Murray Senior's home site, & Russell's home site.
P.S. Special thanks to Sam Fife for
helping me get it all straight.

This
is a copy of Crown Grant #11007, Grant Book 47, Page 29 to the Estate of
James Fife, Cumberland County. The grant is dated 01 April 1873. The
property is a water lot between the low water mark and the high water mark
in Sand Cove near the Joggins. The grant is to William Greenfield the
executor of the late James Fife. Notice on the map, second page there is
additional Fife property to the left of the grant - and it's dry land! |
